Help build a community where everyone has a decent place to live!
Volunteers report that serving with Habitat is a meaningful experience because they are working to make this a better community while changing the life of a family in need of decent, affordable housing.
There are several ways to volunteer with Habitat. No matter which way you choose to serve, you are helping build a world where EVERYONE in our community has a decent place to live!
Construction
Come join us on the job site! You will work with our skilled construction staff to learn new skills, get some fresh air and exercise and, most importantly, to help provide deserving families in our community with a decent place to live. Serving with Habitat feels like you’re building more than just homes on the job site, you’re also building relationships and communities.
No experience is necessary, just a desire to help and to learn something new. Please wear work appropriate clothes – dress for the weather and wear close-toed shoes. You may bring your own tools if you’d like, but Habitat will provide everything you’ll need for the day. Habitat volunteers perform a variety of critical tasks, including painting, framing, roofing, and installing flooring, cabinets, doors, and windows.
We work from 8-11:30am Tue-Sat every week of the year. Tuesdays are our Core Crew days but other days are open for groups to reserve. Individuals age 16 and older are welcome to serve. Water and snacks are provided.
If you are an individual wanting to serve, please complete the volunteer waiver here, complete it and bring it with you when you come to serve. If you are 16-17, complete the Minor Waiver here and be sure to have your parent or guardian sign it before coming to serve. Because we start work at 8am, we ask that you come a few minutes early so we can start on time.
Because our locations change due to weather, vendor deliveries and inspections, you need to call our Habitat Work Line to hear the recording of the address where you will be working. It is updated each morning by 7am.
For the work line number, more information, and/or to reserve a date for your service, please email info@habitatalamance.org.
Are you experienced in construction, especially handy, or maybe just interested in hands-on learning in construction? Our Core Crew is made up of individuals who volunteer to serve regularly, at least twice a month. They work under the direction of our Construction Supervisor to keep the work of building houses going on even when we don’t have groups serving. When we do have a group, the Core Crew members become leaders of task groups. They teach the task for the day to 1 or 2 volunteers and stay with them to supervise. If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a member of our Core Crew, just email info@habitatalamance.org.
Groups who serve with Habitat report that it is a wonderful team building experience that makes a difference in the community at the same time! We work Tue-Sat from 8-11:30am and we welcome groups to serve any day we are working, but you’ll find that Saturdays fill up fast. Please email info@habitatalamance.org for more information or to reserve a date for your group to serve.
Groups are limited to 8 people. If you have a larger group you’d like to accommodate, contact info@habitatalamance.org for special arrangements. While it’s not required, many groups serving make a donation to the ministry.
Hospitality

Our hospitality ministry is a way to help build a house without swinging a hammer! We have opportunities to serve a meal on the job site or provide simple snacks for special groups who are visiting the area or who serve longer in the day. Volunteers provide food, either prepared or purchased. Habitat provides paper products and water.
Your gift of food directly contributes to our mission of building houses, communities and hope as the volunteers benefit from sharing a meal together after a busy morning working. You also save the Habitat staff from purchasing and serving the meal. We welcome you to stay and eat with the volunteers and get to know them.
Contact info@habitatalamance.org to join our Hospitality Ministry.
ReStore

Another way to help build a house without swinging a hammer is by serving at the ReStore! Proceeds from the ReStore sales are our largest source of construction funds.
There are unique opportunities to serve at the ReStore. From helping unload trucks, to organizing inventory, to setting up floor displays, you can put your individual talents to work. We have had handy people test and even repair small appliances before we sell them, and we have had people with decorating talents help us create attractive displays and even offer DIY makeover classes!
Want to serve with your friends? Bring your volunteer group out to the ReStore! Volunteer groups typically help unload donated household items, organize and clean donations, place items on the sales floor, maintain the cleanliness & organization of the store, and assist customers with carry-outs after purchase. Group sizes range from 3-5 volunteers.

Community Service

Habitat Alamance does accept volunteers who are serving for court-ordered or attorney-recommended service both in the ReStore and in construction. It’s important to note that in either area, you MUST call or email ahead of time to schedule your community service.
